Sustainable Development Goals
- The Sustainable Development Goals, also known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
- These 17 goals build on the success of the Millennium Development Goals (2000–2015) and include new areas such as climate change, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption, peace, and justice.
- The goals are interconnected—often the key to success for one lies in addressing issues more commonly associated with another.
- Achieving the SDGs requires practical, partnership-based efforts to make the right choices now to improve life sustainably for future generations. They offer clear guidelines and targets for all countries in line with their own priorities and global environmental challenges.
- The SDGs represent a comprehensive agenda. They address the root causes of poverty and bring us together to create positive change for people and the planet.
- Saudi Arabia is a founding member of the United Nations and has played an active role in shaping the SDG outcomes. Over the last five decades, the Kingdom has made significant progress in economic and social development and has built a strategic partnership for development with the UNDP.
- In 2018, Saudi Arabia presented its first Voluntary National Review at the High-Level Political Forum held from July 9 to 18, 2018, at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Over 1,000 representatives from governments, delegations, businesses, and civil society attended to discuss progress on SDG implementation. The 2018 theme was “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies.”
- Saudi Arabia’s Voluntary National Review, supported by the UNDP, offered a comprehensive review of SDG status, alignment with Vision 2030, and actions taken by national entities—including government, private sector, and NGOs—to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
